London Under Attack: Blame It on Blair

posted Thursday, 7 July 2005
Blair's Chickens Come Home to Roost

Mister Conceit gets his come-uppance. So, these 'terrorists' attack us for no apparent reason? They are barbaric, inhuman, killing 'innocent' working people.

You know the rhetoric by now. We're not meant to focus on British/American barbarity/terrorism in Iraq and around the world for centuries in the name of Imperialism.

The British people's response to this should be the same as that of the Spanish public. Kick out the leaders who took us into the war on Iraq.

Are you going to swallow Blair's hypocrisy?

Tony Blair has said terrorists will not succeed in destroying "our values and our way of life" after blasts hit London's transport network.

The prime minister said it was reasonably clear the blasts were a terrorist attack designed to coincide with the G8 summit in Gleneagles.

He said he was flying back to London to hear reports from police and emergency services face-to-face.

But the G8 summit would continue in his absence, he said in a TV address.

Mr Blair said it was "reasonably clear" terrorists were behind the blasts.

"It is important that those engaged in terrorism realise that our determination to defend our values and our way of life is greater than their determination to cause death and destruction to innocent people in a desire to impose extremism on the world," he said.

"Whatever they do, it is our determination that they will never succeed in destroying what we hold dear in this country and in other civilised nations throughout the world."

Mr Blair said all the G8 leaders wanted the meeting to continue in his absence so "that we should continue to discuss the issues that we are discussing and reach the conclusions that we were going to reach".

"Each of the countries around that table have some experience of the effects of terrorism and all the leaders ... share our complete resolution to defeat this terrorism," he continued.

"It is particularly barbaric this has happened on a day when people are meeting to try to help the problems of poverty in Africa and the long term problems of climate change and the environment.

"Just as it's reasonably clear this is a series of terrorist attacks, it's also reasonably clear, that it is designed and meant to coincide with the G8."

BBC political editor Andrew Marr said Mr Blair was clearly extremely upset when he gave his reaction to the blasts.

I suppose you believe that MI5 or 6 planted these bombs. Sometimes you just have to accept that there are a lot of nutters in this world who are happy to kill and maim innocent people.

Blame the attack on the Iraq war, blame it on the existence of Israel, blame it on the general unfairness of the world if you wish. The simple truth is that terrorism happens for more prosaic reasons, few people sign up as bombers just because they believe in a cause. You join up because you meet someone who is involved who persuades you that the cause is worthwhile.

The ideology comes into play later. The London Bombers were unfortunate pawns who paid with their lives for their naivete. Sadly so did 50 or 60 others.

I won't convince you to have second thoughts but just spare a thought for the victims of the causes you support.

I do blame this attack on Blair. I don't think the fact that Blair allied us so closely with Bush's crazy idea to invade Iraq helped Britain's opinion in the arab world. I would be very surprised if France or Germany were to be the next targets as they decided not to cosy on up to Bush's war for oil and power in Iraq. Most of the British people were aginst the war they believed it to be a two-faced and duplicitous escapade. I think the fact that the British are not rising up against the government (as the Spanish did last year) is because we are basically a very deferrant society. Of course the bombings in London were appallying but it just gets to me that if one expresses the view that it could be related to British foreign policy then I am accussed of treason and being unpatriotic.
