The 'Left' in America: Intellectual Masturbation

posted Wednesday, 12 October 2005
The so-called left in America became irrelevant long ago and some like Christopher Hitchens have been put in the graveyard of history, as historical opportunists.

Indeed, even forums like this one are nothing but a practical irrelevance or intellectual masturbation by people who "imagine" they are effective or relevant but actually produce nothing.

Look at how many people actually read an essay here or bother to make a comment on it to find how capitalism has subdued radicalism and its praxis. The Left is dead and died when the first drunk rat, Hitchens, jump out of the ship! 911 put the final nails in the left's coffin!

The funniest thing of all is that they think that because they have a forum, they are relevant.

Actually, to be in this Forum or write for ZNet, Commondreams, The Nation - you name it - is the manifestation of the demise of the left into a philosophical abyss of Hegelian Nihilism and becoming an idealist without action.

A fat-cat or worse a blind fat-rat in a capitalist system which sings La Marseillaise and enjoying the echo, ignorant that nobody is listening to their music.

The country has been hijacked by the Neo-Cons. Civil liberties have been curtailed. Marshal law and State of Emergency is the fact of life.

All branches of government are controlled by one ideology. There is no debates where it matters and the dead left is still challenging the fat Tariq Ali for a debate about the left irrelevance.

Wake up and smell your Starbuck Coffee. You are all dead because you have become intellectually impotent.

FREE INTELLECTUALS VERSUS CORPORATE EXPERTS

What is happening in America is that Independent Media, instead of being a free investigative body, is embedded within the corrupted powers that it is supposed to investigate.

America has become a one-party system in which one ideology controls all aspects of government. Since the selection of George Bush the whole political landscape has irreparably changed to a corporate plutocracy rather than democracy.

American society, culture and its corporate intellectuals have become dumbfounded by the progress of Neo-Cons and their apparent supremacy in social control by instigating Fear in the heart of its citizens.

Except a few unsettled souls in alternative media, who either write self-congratulatory reports, publish fruitless articles, or play their own little power games to prevent publication of critical views of themselves, there exists no alternative politics.

THE INTERNET AS OPIATE OF THE INTELLECTUALS

Mass media is in corporate control and is acting as the Public RelationS and propaganda machine to control the voting public.

The public is controlled by the corporate media and the internet is nothing but a psychological release bottom for public.

Instead of building a social movement against the socio-political manipulation and control of public, it has become the opium for the voices of dissents to drawn themselves into seclusion.

The internet has created Virtual intellectuals, who live in a “make-believe” world of Google and Microsoft.

The internet has become the main playground for the discontent of any kinds, and is often ignored by the voting public.

It is an arena for restless intellectuals to get their anger out. Internet publishing and exposing the atrocities of the power elites is not an expression of free media in a democratic society.

It has become an anger management class and sedative practice to channel all anti-structural factions into a state of despair and fatigue.

Psychologically, people who waste energy in writing become devoid of praxis and lose their dialectical interrelationship with others, who could have otherwise acted in concert in a revolutionary act against the oppressive system.

The Internet is an arena for fools who produce nothing but individuated atomized beings. It gives them a Forum for empty communication which lacks socio-political bondage and is devoid of communal cohesion or human sentiments. It has become a Wonderland for fools who have no effect on social policy.

And yet, we cannot underestimate the impact 'real-time technology' has had on the formation of transnational consciousness. i.e. the Islamic sense of itself as a nation, with 'terrorism' being the most salient of its manifestations. When we realise that the nation-state is a formation emerging, amongst others, from, and being reinforced by a previous state of technology and technological literacy, we'll realise that much of the global upheavels we are currently witnessing is a direct result of new technology, increase in technological literacy and the inability of the Oligarchs of the Day to monopolise communications technology.

However, that does not invalidate any of your points - just their all-encompassing applicability.

The corporate media is, more or less, as you describe it. The internet, however, is more important than you think. It is an alternative view, sure, but it is, also, a gathering place - a forum - in which to discuss, develop, encourage, and disseminate ideas. The corporate view still predominates, but less and less, year by year as internet influence continues to gather steam. I think many of us are getting tired of being talked down to by "pundits" who are a bought and paid for to spread the conventional corporate "wisdom" that all the while leaves out or distorts so much inconvenient information.

Without full and accurate provision of information, Democracy is a sham. Thats becoming more and more apparent. We're in the midst of an important evolution here, and even if our individual voices are as meaningless as you say, it contributes to the gathering of consensus that gives a foundation to real power.

Farhat, the focus of your concerns is misplaced. The Internet, in the context of your article, is simply an electronic communication devise. It attests no personal or political values, it assures no definite successes or failures, its policy propagation capacities are near nil and as a vehicle of political revolution, it lags even the cell-phone.

These personal pains that you point out are not, in any way, resultant of this gabfest, electronic, machine’s deficiencies—you need to look closely at your gloomy, elegiac messages. Again, it’s the message not the machine. The praising of Marxists-socialists and the verbal support of terrorism, are not well received by the American masses-- for reasons similar to those impelling Stalin to kill all the capitalist in the former USSR. But in America we don’t punish radical dissidents—we just don’t read their blogs

This writer is a token exception, I personally like Ed Strong’s blog site. I read virtually all of the blogs, even though some are boring—although, numerically, no more than other sites. I disagree with the conclusions of most, I disagree with the obscenity and four-letter words in-lieu-of-an-effective-vocabulary tendencies—but for me these are not sufficient reasons to forsake the site—since I tire quickly of essays that I already agree with. I want to see what the other guy is saying—it aids me in personal balance, I am able to see my views along side theirs and sense, in the contrast, a feeling of, unearned, but none-the-less happy personal blessing.

Of course, I’m not a leftist revolutionary, so my take differs from yours. My aims are much more modest, in keeping with what I view as the realities of the possible. America simply is not fertile ground for any movement properly defined as a “revolution.”

There are some fundamental problems with this republic that need changing. Two are listed below and if you desire comments, deal with these patent realities and reader’s comments will begin to flow.

SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR THE RADICAL LEFT.

  • DON’T RANT ABOUT IRRELEVANCIES

*Stop whining and nit-picking about the president or his staff (any president-any staff). This level is much too high for you to aim and expect tangible political results. The Russians didn’t complain that the Tsar picked his nose, nor that the Romanovs shopped at labor-cheating Wal-Mart. THIS is definitely an area where Internet time is thrown away. If you want readership and comments, look closely at the shamefulness of the following:

TWO SERIOUS PROBLEMS OF THE AMERICAN REPUBLIC.

-1- THE ROBBER BARONS OF THE USA BANKING INDUSTRY.

These sleazy jerks are running down small businesses and poor families with the total blessing of Democrats, Republicans and Libertarians. Addicting credit cards are killing poor families. Offered at 1-2-3, or even 0% -- then graduating to 24-29% -- and destroying a family’s ability to overcome the resultant shock. If you write a check on your account (assuming you are a Nobody to the bank) and the funds are not immediately available to cover it—your check is returned and the barons pockets $30.00—EVEN IF YOUR KID GOES HUNGRY. Three bad checks and the barons pockets $90.00—many poor workers don’t earn this amount in a full day. If, however, you are a Somebody and bounce a check, they mail you a note saying they paid the check anyway. Why?? Somebodies usually maintain over-balances enabling the barons to steal the interest on the Somebody’s money. It always the little guy who gets the shaft. The reason is infinitely simple: BIG, FEDERALLY “CONTROLLED” AND GUARANTEED BANKS DO NOT WANT THE POOR’S ACCOUNTS, BECAUSE THE POOR HAVE LITTLE OR NO MONEY (SURPRISE!). And virtually no one in government gives a rat’s ass.

Libraries could be written about fraudulent loan practices of major American banks. If a local small business or family sues a large bank for fraud or other crimes (and it happens every day) you will almost certainly not read about in your newspaper. Why?? American bankers are one of the newspaper’s largest commercial accounts.

Farhat, you want to talk about controlling the media??

-2- THE LEGAL/JUSTICE SYSTEM IN AMERICA IS SLOWLY ROTTING

If you commit a grave criminal act in America and are poor, you are in deep trouble. If you are a celebrity or wealthy (or both), the same crime will result in much less, if any, punishment. In fact, there is a stronger likelihood that you will not even be indicted for the crime. In a rather small but increasing percentage of the time, justice is for sale in this country.

This is not new—it occurs in other democracies also. The essential difference is that, we tell the world that American Justice is blind, but because our modern, super-complex—made to order by lawyers, for lawyers and their moneyed clients (and poorer victims)—American Justice is far from blind, but can spy big bucks for a thousand miles. I cite here not illegality (although this is common) but that which is part of the code but begs perversion by slick attorneys, who are masters of deceit and legal perversion

Why is it not reformed? The people who designed our legal system (and those who only could reform it) are the lawyers themselves. They have an absolute vested interest in perpetuating this stranglehold of planned complexity and unnecessary confusion on the wellbeing and natural liberties of American citizens.

There is virtually no legal document in your possession that you would be comfortable in signing your name to apart paying a lawyer to read it. It means nothing if you have a PHD in ancient, ecclesiastical and classical Latin, because legalese is corrupted Latin, corrupted with corrupted medieval English , and can only be deciphered by a corrupted lawyer—FOR A FEE.

Such a system is little more than legalized extortion.

One more thing Farhat:

DON’T DISPARAGE OTHER’S RELIGIOUS BELIEFS.

You have no unique insight as to whether God exists. 87% of Americans believe in the affirmative. It does not matter what you think—of what they think, it can have no relevancy to your stated political objectives. If you can’t stay away from people’s private beliefs—hang up this job and start writing philosophy. These are the people you will need, to make even the tiniest crack in American policy. You have no chance of receiving believer’s confidence and aid if you dismiss their heartfelt spirituality as stupidity. Nor do you deserve it.
